A Republican governor is ordering automated license-plate readers stripped from state interstates within 30 days. The same technology that recovers stolen cars and finds missing people has also been used by an officer to track an ex-girlfriend and raises broader fears of private-company and government data misuse. Supporters of law enforcement now face a sharper question: how much tracking is too much before it becomes a surveillance state that needs an overhaul.
