God’s Promises Are for Now — and for Future Generations

Sometimes I look back and marvel at the ways God showed up for me when I least deserved it. There was a time in my life when I turned away from God. I knew His truth, but I didn’t want to face it. I was hurting, confused, and looking for what felt like the easiest way out.

In that season, I chose abortion. At the time, I told myself it was the quickest solution to a difficult situation. I thought it would erase the problem and let me move on. Deep down, I knew better — but I still walked away from God’s love and chose my own path.

What’s astonishing to me now is not my failure… but His faithfulness. Even when I ran, He didn’t stop loving me. Even when I tried to shut Him out, He kept reaching for my heart. Even when I believed I had ruined my story, He was already writing redemption into the next chapter.

I didn’t return to God because I suddenly became strong — I came back because His mercy met me in my weakness. That’s who God is. He doesn’t wait for us to be perfect to love us. He doesn’t abandon us when we mess up. He meets us right where we are, and He gently leads us back to hope, healing, and grace.

If you’re carrying regret, pain, or questions about your past, I understand. Truly. And I want you to know this: your story isn’t over. God has not walked away from you. His love isn’t fragile, and neither is His plan for your life.

You don’t have to have everything figured out. You don’t have to pretend you’re fine.
You just have to turn your heart toward the One who never stopped loving you. That’s where healing begins.

When It’s All Too Much

There have also been seasons when I was exhausted, overwhelmed, or frustrated, and sure that I wasn’t enough. Times when I thought, Lord, I’ve failed again. Surely You are done with me. But here’s the gospel truth that steadies my heart every time: When we are at our worst, God is at His best. His love is not dependent on our performance. His faithfulness does not waver when ours falters. His promises are not fragile — they are eternal, stretching across generations.

And there are other seasons when I am seeking God — when I’m trying so hard to do the right thing — and still, it feels like too much. In the last few months, my grandma passed away, we moved, and my in-laws moved into our house so that John and I can help care for them.

That’s on top of book deadlines, teen struggles, and serious health concerns for one of my adult kids. There have been days I sat in the quiet car after dropping kids at practice or walking out of a doctor’s office, whispering, Lord, I’m trying… but this is heavy.

Even then — especially then — God meets me. Not because I’m strong, but because He is. Not because I get everything right, but because His grace is steady when life is not. He doesn’t abandon us in the chaos; He carries us through it.

Romans 5:8 says, “But God showed His great love for us by sending Christ to die for us while we were still sinners."

God doesn’t bless because we are good. He blesses because HE is good.

God Blesses the Unexpected

The Bible is full of stories of God surprising people with blessing — not because they earned it, but because He chose it.

  • Abel over Cain
  • Jacob over Esau
  • Joseph over his brothers
  • David, the youngest, over all his older siblings
  • Mary, a humble teenage girl, chosen to carry the Messiah

God consistently, lovingly overturns expectations. Not the oldest. Not the strongest. Not the most impressive. Grace chooses the humble, the willing, the dependent. Charles Spurgeon once wrote: “Grace does not choose the strong, but the weak; not the worthy, but the unworthy.”

And oh, how that truth meets us in our parenting, our ministry, our everyday life. God’s blessing comes not because we have it all together but because He holds all things together. God’s grace meets us where we are — but it never leaves us there.

The Promises of God Never Fail

One ancient leader in the Bible, near the end of his life, looked back over decades of history and told the people:

“Soon I will die, going the way of everything on earth. Deep in your hearts you know that every promise of the Lord your God has come true. Not a single one has failed!” - Joshua 23:14

In other words: God keeps His word. Always. Even when people wandered off course. Even when doubts crept in. Even when they struggled and made mistakes. God stayed steady. His love didn’t quit. His commitment didn’t fracture. And friend, that still holds true for us today.

We may fall short. We may have seasons when our faith feels small or shaky. But God’s faithfulness doesn’t depend on our perfection.

2 Timothy 2:13 says, “If we are unfaithful, he remains faithful, for he cannot deny who he is.”.

The Legacy of God’s Presence — A Generational Faith

I love the thread of God’s presence woven through Jacob’s story. He’s another biblical hero whose faith was experienced, remembered, and handed down. My pastor recently shared it this way.

  • Genesis 28:15 — God said, “I am with you.”
  • Genesis 31:3 — God said, “I will be with you.”
  • Genesis 31:5 — Jacob said, “God has been with me.”
  • Genesis 48:21 — Jacob prayed over his family before his death, “God will be with you.”

Do you see it? God’s presence promised. God’s presence proven. God’s presence passed on.

This is what we want for our children too. Not just a faith we talk about — but a faith we live, honor, and hand forward.

Psalm 103:17 tells us, “The love of the Lord remains forever… His salvation extends to the children’s children,”.

The God who walks with us today will walk with our children tomorrow.

“Our sins are many, but His mercies are more.”

John Newton

Praise God for that. Praise God that His mercy outruns our mistakes and His promises outlive our failures. That’s true for our children, too.

Final Encouragement

Friend, wherever today finds you — weary, overwhelmed, hopeful, or somewhere in between — here is your reminder:

  • God keeps His promises.
  • God blesses the humble and the unexpected.
  • When we are at our worst, He is at His best.
  • His presence is for you — and for your children.
  • His covenant love stretches beyond your lifetime.

The legacy we leave is not our perfection — but our trust in the One who is perfect.

Numbers 6:24-26 says, “May the Lord bless you and protect you. May the Lord smile on you and be gracious to you. May the Lord show you his favor and give you his peace.”

Amen and amen.

Here is a gentle, grace-filled closing prayer and reflection section that matches the tone of your message and honors both seekers and believers:

Closing Prayer

Lord,

Thank You for being faithful when I am weak and for loving me long before I ever knew how to love You back. Thank You for meeting me in the places where I’ve run, where I’ve hidden, and where I’ve tried to carry life on my own.

You are the God who rescues, restores, and redeems. You are patient when I wrestle with doubt, close when my heart feels overwhelmed, and strong when I feel fragile.

Help me release the weight I’m carrying into Your hands today. Teach me to trust Your promises, even when life feels uncertain. Hold my family in Your care — now and for generations to come.

Forgive my past, strengthen my present, and guide my future. Write Your hope into my story and remind me daily that I’m never alone — not for one moment. Jesus, draw me near. Do what only You can do. Amen.

Take a moment to breathe and reflect. Let these questions guide your heart toward God gently and honestly:

  • Where in my life do I feel tired, overwhelmed, or unsure?
  • What burden am I still trying to carry on my own?
  • When have I seen God show up for me — even when I didn’t deserve it?
  • What would it look like to trust Him with one step, one choice, or one worry today?
  • Who in the next generation — a child, grandchild, student, or loved one — can I speak blessing and encouragement over this week?

And one more, whispered with grace: What part of my story is God still redeeming? You don’t need perfect answers. Just an open heart.
