Republicans are daring Democrats to vote against legislation that would keep government funding mostly at current levels, but Democrats have held firm. They’re using one of their few points of leverage to demand Congress take up legislation to extend health care benefits.

An attorney for the 22-year-old man charged with killing Charlie Kirk has asked a judge for more time to review the large amount of evidence before deciding if the defense will seek a preliminary hearing. Prosecutors have charged Tyler Robinson with aggravated murder. They plan to seek the death penalty. A preliminary hearing would determine if there is enough evidence against Robinson to go forward with a trial. A brief hearing was held Monday in Provo. It was just a few miles from the Utah Valley University campus where the Sept. 10 shooting occurred. The judge set the next hearing for Oct. 30.
