Three people have been charged with making threats against a judge, a witness and local officials connected to the investigation into the death of Mississippi teenager Nolan Wells. Aug 5 (Reuters) - U.S. health authorities have widened their probe into a cyclosporiasis outbreak tied to iceberg lettuce from central Mexico after detecting cases in six additional states, raising the total to 15 states, according to a source familiar with the matter. The newly linked states are Missouri, Arkansas, Iowa, Nebraska, New Hampshire and North Carolina, the source said. On July 24, an FDA investigation linked the multistate outbreak in nine states to iceberg lettuce served at Yum Brands' Taco Bell restaurants and sourced from privately held Taylor Farms operations in central Mexico, but authorities are still looking for other potential sources. Michigan health officials reported 12,218 cases linked to an outbreak of cyclosporiasis on Wednesday, an increase of 710 cases since its last update a day earlier. The state has reported the first two deaths associated with the outbreak, saying both individuals had significant underlying health conditions. It said the two Michigan cases became ill prior to the voluntary recall of iceberg lettuce announced by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration on July 17. The outbreak in Michigan has resulted in 193 hospitalizations as of July 30, according to the state health department's latest update. Cases of the intestinal infection caused by the cyclospora parasite, which can cause diarrhea, nausea and other gastrointestinal symptoms, have risen steadily across the United States in recent months, according to the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. Nationwide, the CDC has received reports of 10,468 laboratory-confirmed domestic cases of cyclosporiasis and is aware of more than 12,255 additional cases that are not laboratory-confirmed. The agency's surveillance lags state reporting by several weeks. Consumers in the U.S. have been steering clear of some restaurant chains and buying less lettuce in grocery stores, as a ?multistate outbreak of a parasitic disease has fueled confusion over what is safe to eat. Republican senators insist a pardon Fauci received from Democratic President Joe Biden left him ineligible for Fifth Amendment protections. But the clemency is by its nature limited, and some legal experts say Fauci has reason to invoke the Fifth Amendment.

MEXICO CITY (AP) — The State Department on Wednesday offered a $25 million reward for information leading to the capture of Juan Carlos González, or "Pelón,” scaling up pressure on a U.S. citizen who has emerged as the figurehead of Mexico's most powerful cartel. The reward was bumped up from $5 million. The Trump administration offered a total of $100 million in rewards for various leaders of the Jalisco New Generation Cartel, or CJNG, and restricted the visas of family members and business associates of cartel members. The State Department said it was aimed at “crippling the organization’s leadership" while President Donald Trump has ramped up pressure on Mexico and other Latin American nations to carry out his security agenda. CJNG is among eight Mexican cartels designated as a foreign terrorist organization. The group was dealt a blow in February when leader Nemesio Rubén Oseguera Cervantes, or “El Mencho.” was killed by the Mexican military. The U.S. provided intelligence for the operation, which resulted in a burst in violence in the state of Jalisco. González, Oseguera Cervantes’s stepson and a dual Mexican and U.S. citizen, is reported to have taken control of the cartel, which is involved in everything from avocado production to drug smuggling. Wednesday's move comes a few weeks after the Trump administration slapped sanctions against 50 people and companies linked with the cartel, including González. The sanctions froze assets and blocked U.S. financial transactions with those cited. The cartel is considered the largest in Mexico, with a presence in 21 of its 32 states. Its operations have extended to several countries, including the United States. The Trump administration has ramped up pressure on the government of Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum to crack down more heavily on cartels, even threatening military action against the groups.

WASHINGTON (AP) — North Carolina Republican congressman Chuck Edwards has withdrawn from his reelection campaign days after the House Ethics Committee recommended he be censured for unprofessional and inappropriate conduct toward two young female aides. The 65-year-old Edwards has denied any of his conduct was intended as a sexual or romantic advance, but the committee says his behavior would “lead a reasonable observer to interpret it as such.” Edwards said Wednesday on X he made the decision to drop his bid for a third term after “much prayer and reflection." The Ethics Committee on Monday recommended the censure, an act registering its deep disapproval of a lawmaker’s conduct that does not meet the threshold for expulsion.

LOS ANGELES (AP) — A California man is expected in court on a federal weapons charge after authorities say he was arrested at President Donald Trump's golf course near Los Angeles. Authorities say Jeanine John Taele appeared to be monitoring security before the president's visit there and claimed to be part of the security detail. Taele was scheduled to appear in federal court in Los Angeles Wednesday. Law enforcement officials say they seized guns and ammunition from Taele's home after he was arrested Sunday at Trump National Golf Club. Trump attended a Republican National Committee fundraiser at the club on Tuesday. Taele faces both state and federal charges.

The progressive candidate narrowly defeated Rep. Haley Stevens to set up a November matchup with former Republican Rep. Mike Rogers. El-Sayed has little time to celebrate before pivoting to patching up divisions in the party after a bruising primary. During much of the Trump era, Democratic primary voters have often followed the urging of party leaders and favored moderate candidates like Stevens. But this year, they've veered toward insurgents like El-Sayed, who tapped into widespread discontent with the Democratic establishment and the status quo in Washington. Democrats need to rack up as many wins as possible to take back the U.S. Senate, so the party has little room for error against Rogers.

The Caswell County Sheriff’s Office said deputies responded just before 8 a.m. to a home in the Prospect Hill community. Posting on Facebook, the North Carolina State Bureau of Investigation writes: "The Caswell County Sheriff's Office has requested the assistance of the North Carolina State Bureau Of Investigation regarding an early morning mass shooting on Brooks Road in Prospect Hill, North Carolina. This event occurred around 8:30 AM. Caswell Deputies and the North Carolina State Highway Patrol immediately responded. There is no threat to the general public at this time. The Castle County sheriffs office is working to gather the facts of the case. No additional information is available at this time."
